February 12th, 2011. In their third match of the season our ladies hosted University of Nevada Reno this past Saturday. The first 20 minutes saw Reno dominating possession of the ball as the referee penalized the B.R.U.W.S. for infringements at the tackle contest. A quick break in the action allowed the home team to regroup and adjust to the officiating style of the referee. The impact was immediate as the B.R.U.W.S. pressured Reno to kick away possession from their goal line. Fullback Tori Rutherford received the kick and quickly linked up with fellow freshman Megan Bolden, who was able to draw in a defender and pass out wide to Nicole Aveningo who darted in for the try. Angelina Pascual slotted the conversion to add two points. Reno answered back quickly with a try and conversion drawing the score 7-7. Around the 30th minute our ladies began to hit their stride. Passing the ball quickly the B.R.U.W.S. were able to open up space for Rutherford to cross the try line. Pascual converted the try bringing the score to 14-7. The Second half ended with the entire backline passing the ball to release Rutherford into space, adding 5 points to the tally. The 2-point conversion was struck by Pascual and sailed through the post. The score at the end of the first half was B.R.U.W.S. 21 – UNR 7. Focused on the task ahead, the team took the field kicking off to Reno. The B.R.U.W.S. defense was relentless, forcing Reno back into their own half and eventually turning the ball over. Jhoanna Pugrad picked up the ball, boldly charged through two Reno defenders, and reached over the line to score a try. Not to be outdone, Pascual 10 minutes later picked up the ball from the base of a ruck and dove over the line to score. She was then able to slot the conversion bring the score to B.R.U.W.S. 33 - UNR 7. The B.R.U.W.S. were hitting on all cylinders; Reno simply wasn’t able to run a composed offense. In the 67th minute, the B.R.U.W.S. were awarded a scrum on the left side of the field and thirty meters from the try line. From the scrum, Pascual called for a preplanned move, which the backs executed perfectly, opening up a gap in the defense. Rutherford capitalized on this and sprinted through the hole untouched, giving her a hat trick and making the score B.R.U.W.S. 38- UNR 7. Deep in their own half, Reno was forced to kick again. Sueling Calderon charged down the kick and was able to deflect the ball to Kristen Hutchenson, who turned up field and took on three defenders.
